A pit boss is stationed at a table game such as craps or a cluster of gaming tables such as blackjack, roulette and other card games. A craps table will have a bit boss who supervises the 3 dealers at the table, while a blackjack pit boss may manange 4, possibly more tables, each with a single dealer.
A pit boss supervises the floor staff, including rotating their crew around workstations and break times. A bit boss will open a table game after assigning staff and verify the table is ready to open. When a player arrives to buy into a game, the pit boss will ask for a players' club card to record the players play for comp points.  As the dealer completes counting out the players chips they call out the size of the chip buy and depending on the amount of the chip buy (rules vary by casinos) the dealer may need the pit boss's permission to complete the transaction and continue play.  Once the play begins the pit boss supervises the game and watches players to identify cheaters.  If there are unexpected events, such as misdeals or a dice throw that leaves the area of play the pit boss makes the ruling on the outcome of the play.
